Kit Spencer – BMus
Singing and Piano
Kit is a musician and tutor specialising in voice and piano. As their musical background is in Jazz, Contemporary and Musical Theatre, their approach to teaching emphasises performance and ensemble skills. Kit believes finding joy in musical practice is one of the most important things to foster in students; as well as the importance of finding their individual voice and style.
Kit has been performing in bands since they were a teenager, starting in Contemporary Rock and Pop and moving on to Jazz, Musical Theatre and Contemporary Classical at university. These versatile genres challenged and broadened Kit’s view of what music can do in so many exciting ways. The cultures of experimentation and performance oriented practice within these genres have made a huge impact on Kit’s approach to music making and teaching.
Throughout their degree Kit performed in and directed a variety of independent theatre productions, as well as performing with Jazz and Contemporary Classical bands, including UNSW New Music Collective, which in 2019 had the opportunity to perform at City Recital Hall’s Extended Play Festival.
Since graduating, Kit has continued their musical development, turning their focus to Choral and group singing — joining the chamber choir, Aurora Choralis, as well as working on projects which explore Folk music and Communal singing — and finally starting to learn to play guitar!
Kit believes musical education should never stop and fundamentally believes in fostering a lifelong love of music and learning in their students.
